2023 BETTER FUTURE MELBOURNE DESIGN AWARDS | MARS

Gold

Project Overview

This project is a modern mix-and-match style, with blue and white as the base color, creating a quiet and comfortable atmosphere in the Mediterranean. The layout of “MARS” is based on the spatial characteristics of LDK and completely separates the public and private areas. The public area is arranged in the middle, while the private area is planned in the periphery. The client is in the music industry and his wife likes to play the piano for her entertainment in her spare time. The client's workplace is centered on "home" and creating a comfortable space is the key. The designers used arcs to soften the rigidity and hidden lighting to bring a warm tone to the living and dining room. Meanwhile, the blue and white master bedroom with bright lighting and the pink children's room is comfortable and warm. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that this project is equipped with a professional-grade recording room according to clients' professional needs. The designers selected various professional-grade materials to enhance the sound insulation, making the home a place to meditate and start.

Project Brief

Under the modern Mediterranean style blue and white tones, a comfortable and tranquil atmosphere permeates the space. A leisurely living style is revealed in the interplay of light and warm and cold colors. The elegant dark sofa bed, the varied wooden storage cabinet, the large wooden table with strong style, the ceramic dishes, the paintings hanging on the wall with bright colors, and the white irregularly shaped sculptures all exude a relaxed atmosphere with the sound of the piano. “MARS” is with the harmony of special materials. The design uses stacked layers, black frames with a strong impression, inlaid hidden lighting, and full-height dressing mirrors to create a visual fluidity in the open and bright space. The master bedroom's thought-provoking blue walls, linearly designed closet, and fabric curtains are integrated into one room, allowing creative music creators to relax. The children's room is decorated in a pink and duplex plan, allowing the girl to immerse herself in a bright atmosphere. As for the music studio, gray neutral tones are the main color, and the soundproof effect is perfect.

Project Need

The project is a 148.7 square meter newly completed apartment with 4 bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and 3 bathrooms. The design is based on minimalist and warm colors, and the key is to take care of the client's needs. Since the client is in the music industry, the designers used acoustical principles to plan a professional-grade music studio. To strengthen the sound insulation effect, designers chose the soundproof and airtight pressurized door and 90s three-dimensional fiber acoustic panel. These materials can absorb sound and avoid echoes, and also have the dual effect of sound absorption and sound insulation. They also have the function of softening the space and enhancing the texture of the space with its depth and dimensionality. In addition to the music studio, there is also a girls' room in pink. The designers break the limitation in the planning of the children's room and create a magical, warm, and lovely space with a duplex plan. In this way, the space utilization can be multiplied, and the design of the bunk bed becomes a play space for climbing.

Design Challenge

To the designers, it was a great challenge to convince the client with patience and professional advice. For example, many parts needed to be done on their own, and even the location of the toilets and interior details had to be discussed. The project took more time than others in terms of travel and discussion. For instance, the designers spent a lot of time searching for the materials to provide the music studio with a professional level of sound insulation.

Sustainability

The project uses green building materials, eco-friendly paint, and low-formaldehyde flooring that meet national standards. In the blank space, the designers took LDK characteristics as the core of the design, abandoning corridors and useless spaces and placing the public area of the living room in the center of the space. The private areas, such as rooms and studios, are planned peripherally so that both public and private areas can be well-lit and ventilated.
